CP:R/YLC에 함께 참석한 보호자(엄마) 리뷰:

달라스에서 두시간 떨어진 린데일 텍사스에서 7월 세째주에 Jama 가 주최하는 고등학생, 대학 신입생 4박5일 컨퍼런스가 열린다. 고등학생 대상은 YLC (Youth Leadership Conference) 대학 신입생 것은 CPR( College Prep Radiant)이다. BICA(Bridge International Christian Academy) 학생 4명과 함께 나는 인솔자로 와서 수업들을 청강하고 있고, BICA에서 어떻게 적용할지 고민하고 있다.

시간표에서 보듯이, 여러 강사들이 교포 아이들에게 필요한 다양한 주제를 다룬다. Dopamin 중독, 성, 연애, 대학에서 Academic excellence 이루는 길과 시간관리, 심리적 어려움들 aniety, shame 등에 대해서도 배운다.

6-7명 그룹으로 묶어서 소그룹 리더들이 사랑뿜뿜 눈으로 아이를 챙겨준다. Day 1 부터, 보통 아이들이 마지막 저녁 수련회에서 보던 뜨거움을 갖고 예배하는걸 보았다. 내가 자녀에게 도저히 가르쳐줄수 없는 것들을 여기서 집중적으로 배우니 고마운 마음이다.

동부, 서부, 브라질 , 미국 전역에서 모인 아이들이 만나고 Networking이 이뤄지고, 대학가는 아이들은 같은 학교 나 졸업한 형, 누나, 언니를 만나서 조언도 받는다.

전체적인 이곳의 교육 theme은 우리 교포 청소년들이 미국에서 '주인'으로 살아가고 섬기는 리더가 되기를 바라는 것. 나는 " 한국인인것 잊지 말라"라는 신념으로 BICA를 이끌었는데, 이들이 미국에 서 당당히 이땅의 주인으로 살아가는 면을 많이 생각못했다.

아이들은 4박5일 동안 phone detox를 갖는다 (폰을 쓰지 못한다) 보기에 너무 좋다 건강한 집중, 교제가 덕분에 이뤄진다.

여기 Mentor들 가운데 세상 기준으로도 엘리트 들이 많은데 그들에게서 겸손을 배운다. 첫날부터 내 차에 있던 아이들 짐도 들어주고 생글 생글웃으며 반겨준 학생들, 청소하고 식사 돕는 발론티어들 섬기는 젊은이들 "엘리트 의식 없는 엘리트들"이 넘친다. 참여하는 아이들을섬겨주고 사랑해주니 보기만해도 고맙다.

YLC는 어른(Youth workers, 교사나 부모 책임질 성인 인솔자) 이 동행해야 등록이 가능하고, CPR은 상관없다. 올해 YLC에는 70여명. CPR은 32명 이번해 참석했다 . 내년에는 더많은 고등학생들이 참여하면 좋겠다. 특히 CPR은 아이들이 대학가기전 여름에는 기억하시고 꼭 보내길.

“A 5-day, 4-night conference hosted by Jama is held during the third week of July in Lindale, Texas, about two hours from Dallas. The conference is divided into two tracks: YLC (Youth Leadership Conference) for high school students and CPR (College Prep Radiant) for incoming college freshmen. I’m here as a chaperone with four students.

As you can see from the schedule, a variety of speakers cover essential topics for Korean American youth—things like dopamine addiction, sexuality, dating, achieving academic excellence in college, time management, and psychological challenges such as anxiety and shame.

Students are divided into small groups of 6–7, each cared for by loving and attentive small group leaders. From day one, the students worship with the kind of passion you’d usually expect only on the final night of a retreat. I’m truly grateful, because they are learning things here that I simply couldn’t teach them myself.

Students gather from the East Coast, West Coast, Brazil, and all over the U.S., creating great opportunities for networking. College-bound students meet older brothers and sisters—students or alumni of their future universities—who offer advice and mentorship.

The overarching theme here is to raise up Korean American youth to live as owners and servant leaders in America. While I’ve led BICA with a strong emphasis on “Don’t forget you’re Korean,” this experience is challenging me to also consider how we can help our students live confidently as rightful members of this land.

The kids undergo a complete phone detox during the 5 days—no phones allowed—which is so refreshing to see. It fosters healthy focus and real connection.

Many of the mentors here are elites even by worldly standards, yet from them, I’m learning humility. From day one, students welcomed us with big smiles and even helped carry luggage from my car. The volunteers helping with cleaning and meal service—all these young people serving joyfully—show me what it means to be “elite without elitism.” Just watching them love and serve the kids is heartwarming.
